5-a-side vs 7-a-side football.
Pitch sizes, squad numbers, substitution rules and how each format actually plays - so you book the one that suits the number of people who reliably show up.
Pitch dimensions
The single biggest difference is the space each player has to cover. A 5-a-side pitch is roughly 40 by 20 metres; a 7-a-side is around 60 by 40. That is not a modest step up - the 7v7 surface is close to triple the area, split between only two extra players per side.
Nashik turfs vary from these figures, and a turf advertised as 6v6 is usually a 5-a-side pitch with a little extra width. Ask for the actual dimensions if your group cares about the difference.
- 5-a-side - about 40m × 20m, goals roughly 3m × 1.2m.
- 7-a-side - about 60m × 40m, goals roughly 4.9m × 2.1m.
- Area per outfield player - roughly 200m² at 5v5, roughly 400m² at 7v7.
Squad size and substitutions
5v5 runs on rolling substitutes: players come on and off continuously without stopping play. Eight in a squad is comfortable, ten is generous. Above that people spend more time watching than playing.
7v7 needs a bigger squad and benefits from a more structured bench. Fourteen gets the game on; eighteen lets you rotate without anyone standing still for ten minutes in the cold.
- 5v5 - 5 on the pitch, squad of 7 to 10, rolling subs.
- 7v7 - 7 on the pitch, squad of 9 to 12 per side, rolling or structured subs.
- A short 7v7 (six a side on a 7v7 pitch) drains legs fast. Drop to a smaller pitch instead.
How the game actually plays
At 5v5 you are never out of the play. The ball is within a few seconds of you at all times, transitions are constant, and the game rewards close control, quick combinations and the ability to shoot early. Positions blur - everyone defends and everyone attacks.
7v7 opens up enough space for genuine shape. You get recognisable full-backs, a holding midfielder, wide play and switches of play that actually cover ground. It rewards positioning and passing range over raw close control.
- 5v5 - high touch count, constant transitions, close control and finishing under pressure.
- 7v7 - real defensive shape, wide play, switches, and a genuine role for a holding midfielder.
- Goalkeepers - far busier at 5v5; more of a sweeper role at 7v7.
Stamina and load
5v5 is more intense per minute and easier on total distance: high-frequency short sprints in a small area, typically over 40 to 50 minutes. It is the harder session for your lungs and the easier one for your legs the next day.
7v7 covers noticeably more ground over a longer game, usually 60 to 90 minutes with a half-time break. The sprints are longer and the recovery windows are real, which suits players who prefer pacing a game over surviving one.
Which format should your group book?
Pick by the number of people who reliably turn up, not by the number in the group chat. If eight is your dependable count, 5v5 gives everyone a good game every week. If you can raise sixteen without chasing anyone, 7v7 is the better use of a pitch and a better game to watch.
There is also a cost angle: a 7-a-side turf costs more per hour, but split across fourteen players the per-head slot fee often lands close to a 5v5 split across ten.
- Reliable count of 8-10 → book 5v5.
- Reliable count of 14-18 → book 7v7.
- In between → book 5v5 and keep a waitlist rather than playing a thin 7v7.
Frequently asked
How many players do I need to book a 7v7?
Fourteen to start, and realistically eighteen to run it properly with rolling substitutes. If you can only reliably raise ten or twelve, book a 5v5 instead - a 7v7 played short is a worse game than a full 5v5.
Is 5-a-side the same as futsal?
No. Futsal is played indoors on a hard court with a smaller low-bounce ball and touchlines you can play out of. 5-a-side on a turf usually has rebound boards or netting and a standard ball.
Which format is better for fitness?
5v5 gives you more touches and near-constant involvement in a shorter burst. 7v7 covers more total distance over a longer game. For an hour of hard work, 5v5 is the more intense option.
